Martie's "Use What You Have Holiday" Ideas: Tin Can Centerpieces

HERB CENTERPIECE IN TIN CANS

Use old photos for placecards for your holiday dinner or for a family photo galleryA deliciously fragrant and easy way to decorate the house for the holidays... plus you can use them for gifts, too! Tin cans that you save can be covered with wrapping paper or scrapbook paper and used for planting herbs, small plants and even trees! Cluster these on the table for a centerpiece, put one at each placesetting for a favor, or wrap them up for a teacher or co-worker present, this one is a gift that keeps giving. For a wedding, just change the color to your wedding color scheme... it's perfect for so many different occasions!

For placecards or for a personal touch, add photos that you can easily attach to a stick (one from the yard is fine) with a small piece of double stick tape. You can do what we've done here and use a old photo of each guest to mark their place. This is really fun for a wedding reception. You can use old photos of the couple in grass flats or the way we have here.

Martie's "Use What You Have Holiday" Ideas: Cylinder Vases Two Ways

HOLIDAY PAPER LANTERNS AND RIBBON WRAPPED VASES

This is a great way to use the cylinder type vases you get when someone sends you flowers! You can wrap the vase in ribbon as I did with the one on the left or you can make a cover for the vase using scrapbook paper or heavy weight wrapping paper to create a "tube" to slide over the cylinder and you'll completely change the look! So that the light shines through, use a hole punch or a fancy punch you can find at the hobby store like this one with stars. The light shines through and makes it look really festive.

If you plan to use a candle, be sure and put kosher salt, sand, beans, or something in the bottom of the vase so it won't crack from the heat of the candle.

small cylinder vase

scrapbook or wrapping paper

LED light or candle (if you use a candle, you have to put kosher salt, or something in the bottom of the vase so that the glass does not get too hot)

I have done these lanterns for lots of occasions-they are the perfect way to add a pop of holiday color without spending a fortune. You can use wrapping paper but I like the weight of scrapbook paper. See more paper lantern ideas for parties and weddings....
