Eco-Friendly Party Ideas for Weddings, Mother's Day, Birthdays, or Just Because!

I am getting more and more requests for Eco-Friendly ideas and concepts for weddings, parties, birthdays, etc. If you want to be eco-friendly, think about using items you can either reuse, recycle, or re-purpose. An old wine box becomes a cheese board. Flats of flowers are pretty for decorations and go on to have new life in the garden. There are lots of pretty new bio-degradable paper products you can find now and when you use fruits, veggies and other food items for decorations, you can EAT them after the party! Here are some simple and fun suggestions for your next get-together, just in time for Earth Day, Arbor Day, Mother's Day, and Spring planting season!

Here are some tips and favorite images from over the years...

Use plants, trees, herbs, pots or flats of flowers, mini-shrubs, or mini-evergreens like lemon cypress. Wrap in burlap, put in a tin can, put them in market baskets, etc. They look pretty and you can use them in the yard after the party.

You can find lots of eco-friendly serving pieces, plates, etc these days. Melamine is awesome; you can reuse it over and over again. There is also lots of new bio-degradable products that look beautiful  instead of institutional. You can find these at any party store.

Use wood... rugged, rustic and it lasts forever. We cut wood rounds from a fallen tree to use for trivets, stacking and candle holders for a wedding 3 years ago and have used them many times since.

Use fruit and veggies that compliment your menu for decorations... and eat them after. Yum.

You will be shocked at what you can reuse, repurpose or recycle. I used the top of a wooden wine box for this cheese board presentation! Lightly sand it and wash it thoroughly before using it.

Grass flats make everything look fresh and Spring and are the perfect palate to work from for decorating for just about any occasion. If you use wheat grass, you can even juice it and drink it afterward. Yuck.

Eco-Friendly Party Idea: Plant Some Fun by Hosting a Garden-ing Party!

Need a great party plan for SPRING? This one can be used for so many different occasions. A GARDEN-ing Party or Planting Party is one of my very favorite party ideas. It is not only fun- my number one criteria for a party- but it's also a great way to get kids and adults in touch with growing vegetables and eating healthier. No matter if you want to plant veggies, flowers, or trees; hosting a planting party is fun for all ages. And the benefits will grow and grow!

When my nephew turned seven, I wanted to do something "educational" for his birthday. I was completely shocked at his response from the garden tools and vegetable plants and seeds that were his present. He started screaming at the top of his little lungs. "Okra! I got okra! And tomatoes! I got tomatoes!" He jumped up and down and squealed with delight. After he planted them, he would call me almost daily with a progress report. As the years went by, that kid would always plant a garden and grow tomatoes, peppers, and of course, okra. I've never forgotten that birthday:))

When the weather starts to get warm, most of us are ready to dig in the dirt, plant something, or freshen up outdoor space after a long winter. Earth Day (April 22) and Arbor Day (the last week of April in most states) are coming up. And don't forget Mother's Day is May 8th. Wouldn't it be wonderful to make-over your mom's patio or yard with some colorful new plants or a few vegetable plants?

Many schools, youth organizations, and neighborhoods are growing community gardens. But if you don't have that movement happening in your area, start one! You don't need a lot of people at first. You can start small. Ask a couple of neighbors to participate and split the cost and the responsibilities of maintenance. There are some great sites with information on community gardens including tips on everything from getting started to funding.

Any occasion is right for a planting party: a best friend's birthday, wedding, bridal shower or wedding party at your house, your kid's birthday, neighborhood party, family reunion, or community garden day. You really don't need a reason to host a planting party. It's one of those do-good, feel good types of parties that I love! Here's the how-to:

INVITATIONS & GUESTS

Think old-timey barn raising-- remember when neighbors would help a family build a barn? Friends would show up with tools and the barn would go up. This is the same premise. Invite friends to come build a garden. If it is a community garden, you'll need to form a committee and divvy up the planting and chores. For the party above, the host provided lunch and the guests provided the plants for her birthday presents. After a few hours of planting, guests had a lovely lunch on the patio, completely freshened up and ready for spring!

THE MENU

Salad in a Jar: Make these ahead for an easy and healthy lunch for party guestsIf you are hosting the party at your house, you'll provide the food and drinks. If you are surprising someone with a garden or yard make-over, then you'll also provide the food... my salad in a jar is perfect for a quick lunch on work day. You can prep in advance and store in the fridge or a cooler until it's time to eat.

A big dispenser with chilled water, lemonade, and/or Sweet Tea (I'm from the South where Sweet Tea is essential) will keep everyone hydrated and happy. Plus, the serve-yourself option always makes bartending and hostessing duties easier. Or, if you don't have a large dispenser, fill up a tub, wheelbarrow, or large planter with ice and chill your favorite beverages. I personally like the wheelbarrow because you can move it around easier--- important if you are in the sun. As the sun shifts, you can move the drinks into the shade so the ice won't melt:)Planting party survival kit with Advil, band-aids, gloves, sunscreen, bug spray, etc

SUPPLIES

I always have a "survival kit" made up for any outdoor party. It includes everything we might need: bandaids, wipes, sunscreen, bug spray, bandanas, hats, visors, tools, etc. You get the idea. Keep it where guests can find it so they can stay cool, comfortable, and prepared to be out in the elements.

DECORATIONS

Look at the pretty decorations from our own Garden-ing Party! I used lots of garden supplies for the decorations that everyone was able to take home after the party including these colorful ceramic toadstools from JJ Potts. Find more more cute garden accessories and supplies from the great folks at Plow and Hearth and Gardener's Supply. I also found some adorable watch and grow planting pots at Oriental Trading Company. I think they make perfect party decorations and they are functional!

Burlap table overlay, paper and melamine plates, and plastic margarita glasses are cheap chic!Too cute toadstools made in the USA from JJPotts

ENTERTAINMENT

Everyone loves to work to music! Make a party playlist of your own favs; whether your gang likes old-school or pop, make a playlist of tunes to run the length of the party. Or skip the music and let the gossip and girl talk take center stage!

If you need more information or ideas for your own planting party, I've got tons! Just message me from my website and I'll respond!

Happy planting.... happy SPRING!

Valentine's Day Treats: Easy Chocolate Fondue

I think Fondue should be called Fun-due because what's not fun about dipping stuff in melted chocolate? It's simple, romantic, indulgent, and delightful... all on a stick! Well, on a skewer. But the point is that in less than 15 minutes, you can create a quick and elegant party for two (or twenty) that looks as gorgeous as it tastes.

Prep all of your dippers; almost anything tastes good in chocolate. Suggestions: strawberries, pineapple chunks, marshmallows, cookies, pretzels, apple slices, bananas, biscotti, orange sections, and graham crackers. I like to put some on skewers to create a little sculpture. Then place the remaining ingredients on a platter or in bowls.

Photos: Arden PhotographyEasy Chocolate Fondue

1 cup whipping cream

3 semi-sweet chocolate bars (4 ounces each) chopped (I like to mix in some bittersweet also)

2 tablespoons of your favorite liqueur* (I like hazelnut, orange, raspberry, or coffee)

*Substitute 2 tablespoons strong coffee OR simply add 1/2 teaspoon vanilla if you don't want to use liqueur.

Add the chocolate to a heat-proof bowl over a double boiler (a heat-proof bowl placed over a simmering pot of water) Keep the water simmering, not boiling as not to burn the chocolate. As the chocolate begins to melt, stir in the whipping cream, a little at a time. After it is incorporated, stir in the liqueur.

Transfer to a fondue pot if you have one, If you don't use a heat-proof dish (like Pyrex) with a tea light or votive candle under the dish to keep the chocolate melted. A dish that is not heat-proof, such as porcelain or ceramic will crack.

NOTE: The dish will get very hot so make sure the candle is not too close to the dish and take extreme care when handling!!

Valentine's Day Party Ideas for Singles or Couples: Host a Wine Find!

Do you have a mix of singles and couples you’d like to celebrate Valentine’s Day with this year? Select a party theme that doesn’t necessarily require any partnering or couple-oriented activities. Instead, select something that can be fun for all... Host a Wine Find!

Photo: Arden Photography

A “Wine Find” is always lots of fun. You know how everyone just loves to introduce a good, inexpensive and interesting wine to their friends--- "I found this amazing red from just outside Burgundy and it was only $12.99!"  Well, you can turn the quest for a great, inexpensive bottle of wine into an inexpensive party theme. Here's how:

Ask each guest to bring their favorite "cheap" wine  along with a simple food pairing and tasting notes for the wine. You can usually find these at the store or online. Set a price limit if you want to really challenge your guests... say, nothing over $15 per bottle.

Award prizes for the winners with the best white, red and sparkling wines with one special prize for the overall winner.

Photo: Arden PhotographyNeed prize ideas? Boxes of nice chocolates, wine accessories, a really good bottle of good bubbly, gift cards to a favorite wine shop or book store, or movie tickets are always a good bet. Hope you and yours celebrate the day that celebrates love with lots of fun and laughter!

For a variation on this party theme, watch my Host a Wine Around the World Party video or read the how-to and take your party to a whole new destination!

Valentine's Day Desserts: Chocolate Souffle with Chambord Creme

Isn't it wonderful that we have an entire day devoted to love, romance, and chocolate!  And since I LOVE chocolate, here's a tribute to my Valentine; deep, dark, rich chocolate!

Soufflés have always intimidated me. As I have learned, soufflés are not difficult. AND they are simply lovely, fluffy, delightful bites of heaven. You can try any sort of topping for this dessert. It's perfect hot out of the oven with just a drizzle of heavy cream... but I wanted something special and really romantic for all of you celebrating Valentine's Day at home... so break out the chocolate, the whipping cream and the Chambord. Doesn't that just sound like a party?

Soufflé au CHOCOLATE

Makes 4 individual servings

Prep: 20 minutes Bake: 15 minutes

INGREDIENTS

1 tablespoon butter

1 tablespoon cocoa

1/3 cup granulated sugar, plus 2 tablespoons for the ramekins

5 ounces bittersweet chocolate, chopped finely

3 large egg yolks, room temperature

6 large egg whites, room temperature

1/16 teaspoon salt

Preheat oven to 375. Butter each ramekin. Dust with the cocoa and sugar. Set aside.

Carefully melt the chocolate over simmering water. Chocolate burns quickly so don't leave it unattended. Stir until just completely melted then remove the chocolate from the heat. Add the egg yolks, one at a time, gently whisking them together with the chocolate. Sit aside.

In a separate bowl, beat egg whites with salt on medium speed until they are shiny and form soft peaks. Then turn the mixer on high and add the sugar, a little at a time until the egg whites will hold stiff shiny peaks.

Next, begin to incorporate the egg whites into the chocolate. This is an important step. You do not want to deflate the egg whites, but you do need to make sure there are no visible whites peeking through. Use a large spoon, spatula, or whisk; work gently. Add about a cup of the egg whites to the chocolate to smooth out the chocolate a bit. Then add the rest, 1/3 at a time, spooning up and over, very gently, to incorporate. It should be very light and fluffy, but make sure you have no threads of white peeking through the chocolate.

Spoon into the prepared ramekins- leaving about 1/2 inch at the top.

You can let these sit for up to 30 minutes before baking or you can bake them immediately.

CHAMBORD (RASPBERRY) CREME

Make this a few hours ahead.... and the white chocolate step is optional if you are short on time.

1 cup fresh raspberries

1/2 cup Chambord (raspberry liqueurl) plus 2 Tablespoons

1 1/2 cups heavy whipping cream plus 2 Tablespoons

1 Tablespoon Confectioner's sugar

2 ounces white chocolate, finely chopped

First, put raspberries in the Chambord and let them soak to absorb the flavor.

Melt the chocolate in a double boiler, stirring to make sure it does not burn. Add 2 Tablespoons heavy cream or whipping cream to make the mixture smooth. Set aside.

Make whipped cream as usual.... Mix on medium, incorporate the sugar and 2 Tablespoons Chambord. Turn up to high and whip until stiff peaks form. With a whisk, add the whipped cream to the white chocolate. Refrigerate until serving time.

When the souffle comes out of the oven, top with the cream and raspberries. Drizzle a litle of the liquid from the raspberries over each. You can omit the cream and just use the raspberries! It's good that way, too!
